I don't want to get overwhelmed by the alienness of Chinese and I think Pimsleur will help in this regard, especially with pronunciation.Īnyway if your goal is to learn a language, Pimsleur isn't the worst way to start. Pimsleur's slower approach has its benefits. However, since the next language I am likely to study is Mandarin Chinese, I will very likely start with Pimsleur again, or at least use Pimsleur as a supplement to Michel Thomas. If I were to ever decide to learn another IE language or just an "easier" language (talk about relative term am I right guys?) then I would not use Pimsleur. Looking back, I probably would have benefited if I started with Language Transfer or Michel Thomas, but it's difficult to say because I already had a basic knowledge of Spanish by the time I did those course. I found that Pimsleur approach worked well as it only rarely made me feel overwhelmed or confused. Preterite? Subjective? Noun Declensions? Grammatical Number? These are all things that we use in language every time we open our mouths yet don't really take the time to think about it. For a first time language learn, this might not be a terrible thing though, as learning a foreign language for the first time makes you think about language in ways you never had before. I think the most common complaints that you are likely to hear about Pimsleur is that they do not cover much and that it is slower in comparison to other programs. This experience shaped my opinion of the program.
